Thursday was our first choir rehearsal and we had close to 50 singers. Wow!! We had fun getting to know one another as we played 'Howdie-Doodie' and warmed up our instruments for singing. Parents and Students are reminded to get their permission slips in and take note of the rehearsal dates. Additional slips are posted outside of the music room and earlier in the blog.
We are working on our Christmas Repertoire and other fun songs for the new year. This month we have enjoyed preparing for our Halloween Howl. All students learned the songs: ‘Halloween Has Come at Last’ and ‘Bones Boogie’. Students and teachers all hip-hopped to the ‘Halloween Dance’ while Rms. 2 and 6 performed ‘Fossils’ from Saint Saens’ ‘Carnival of the Animals’, Rm. 13 presented some eerily lit skulls and skeletons in their performance of “Skeleton, Bones and Skulls” and Rm. 12 presented the sad tale of Captain Donald McKay and his ill-fated ship, the Jessie. All songs and activities imbedded musical curricular concepts and skills from ‘in-tune’ singing to orchestrating a poem to a composer study to improvisational skills on the mallet instruments. Cross-curricular ties were created as the Upper Elementary learned about the Maritimes in Social Studies while learning about the sinking of Captain McKay’s timber laden ship off the shores of Nova Scotia. (A true story of survival and loss that even has a personal twist as the Captain was Mrs. Harvie’s great, great, great grandfather! – and what does a music teacher do? But write a song about it!)
Our kindergartens have been meeting many new friends in the Music Studio: Quack, the duck; Mabel, the Cow, Truffles the Pig, Vern, the rooster, Peter and Penelope the Chickens, Mavis and Mary the Sheep and Udora the Goat. These farmyard friends have helped the students learn and sing about letter sounds as they discover their musical selves through movement, speech, singing and instrument playing. Please make note of the Rehearsal dates for Choir as there are rehearsals on both Wednesdays and Thursdays.
