September has come and gone and October is here. Just a few 'notes' on what has been happening in the music studio.
The Lower Elementary students have enjoyed 'Monkeying Around' as they explored the poem '5 Little Monkeys'. They added movement vocabulary to our Word Wall with juicy verbs like 'scootch, crabwalk and slither'. They honed their inner capacity to hear rhythm as they experimented with word substitution using the Non-Pitched Percussion instruments. In fact, a few parents did too at their Killarney Parent Council meeting!
The students extended their language skills by identifying rhyming words in the song, 'Bing, Bang, Bong' which became a playing experience in high and low sounds on the pitched percussion instruments. The 'Jungle Beat' was also a bluesy way of experiencing all of the wood instruments and drums in the studio.
With October comes preparation for our first Assembly featuring Rms. 5, 6, 8 and 13. Joyfulness is the theme for this event and the Kindergartens in Rm. 8 will demonstrate their first experiences in performance by singing and playing instruments. They are definitely 'Happy and they know it'. Rm. 13 has a little F-U-N with music in an orchestrated speech performance complete with movement choreographed by the students. (They even picked the props too!) Rms. 5 and 6 have written an acrostic poem and created art featuring the word Joyfulness and what it means in their lives. Their performance is rounded out by Pharrell William's 'Happy'. Please join us on Friday, Oct. 9th at 1:30 for this event! All are welcome. We'll be HAPPY to see you!
Our other Upper Elementary classes are working on various pieces ranging from 'The Entertainer' to 'Peter, Peter Pumpkin Eater' 'Ode to Joy', and 'Have you seen the Ghost of John?' Score reading, playing the pitched instruments, singing and understanding 16th notes is all a part of our work. Some of these pieces will be featured in the Halloween Howl on October 29th and the Remembrance Day Ceremony on November 10th.
New this year is our 'Sung Literacy' time with Choir imbedded in the schedule. We have 50 dedicated choristers that rehearse from 12:30 - 1:30 on Thursdays and Fridays. These students will also perform at the Howl and on Remembrance Day.
Thanks to Parent Council we have begun updating our instruments and have purchased a Bass Metallophone, Alto Metallophone, and Soprano Xylophone. With these additions our 'Orffkestra' is gradually coming 'in tune' for our discerning little musicians.
FUN FACT: Did you know that Pharrell Williams has now produced a childrens' book called 'Happy'? All the proceeds go to buying books for underprivileged children. Mrs. Harvie just bought the book, hot off the press, to show her students that are performing 'Happy' in the upcoming Joyfulness Assembly! Available at Amazon.ca
